KENYA CANOE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Kenya is a great destination for water sports, for either leisure and competition. This week sees the first East and Central Africa Rowing and Canoeing Championships being held at the Masinga Dam and on the waters of the Tana River on the Kenyan Coast.

Teams from Egypt, Nigeria and the Seychelles will be competing with local teams, including members of the Kenyan Navy from the 6th to 19th November

The Championships will be used to select Kenya's National Rowing Team who will begin training with international canoeing coach Mike Chiarazzi in readiness for the 2008 Beijing Olympiad.

This event will see the introduction of an all new specialized Slalom Canoe-Kayak course in the Tana River, as the sports become increasingly popular in Kenya. From November 1-5th 2007 we will be hosting the 5th Africa Canoeing Championships and Africa Continental Olympic Qualifers. If you’d like to attend stay tuned for more details next year.

The recently launched Kenya Water Sports Trust is training local teams and guides for water sports tourism, with boats, marine safety equipment, kayaks and canoes funded by the Tourism Trust Fund TTF

For anyone who enjoys kayaking and canoeing, a trip to Kenya offers boundless possibilities, both along the coast and on inland waterways. Much of the coastline is sheltered by protective reef, making calm conditions ideal for sea kayaking and exploring shallow inner reefs and atolls with spectacular sea life-including rare dugongs, myriad tropical fish and dolphins.
