Adventure Safari

This is Mt Kenya’s main attraction, and exploring the forests can be even more enjoyable than high altitude treks.

Trekkers should be adequately prepared. Despite its equatorial location the Mountain can be bitterly cold, and it often rains. All trekkers should have plenty of warm clothing, and sturdy footwear.

The thickly forested Buruget trails are probably the best way to explore these forests. There are no real set routes for forest treks, so a local guide is very useful. Alternatively, make enquiries with a specialist trekking operator for suggested routes and guiding services.

Guides and Porters are highly recommended and can be booked through a trekking company or at a local lodge or hotel.

Mountain Climbing

For full information on climbing Mount Kenya, see the Mountains section.

Horse Riding

Many of the lodges outside Nanyuki have stables and organize rides around the foothills of the mountains. There are also some private stables with horses for hire in Nanyuki, Naro Moru and Timau.

There are many excellent clear mountain streams in this area that are ideal for the trout fisherman. There are several specialist fishing lodges in the area, and some other hotels can also organize for lines tackle and a fishing guide.
