MUSICAL KENYA COMPETITION

Win a copy of the all new CD Rough Guide to the Music of Kenya- a musical tour through Kenya’s history, highlighting lost audio treasures and some of the newest and most vibrant Kenyan artists. From traditional taarab and benga beats to ground breaking African hip hop, the new album is a showcase of Kenyan talent perfect for an introduction to the music of the region. We have 10 copies to give away.

The new album from the acclaimed Rough Guide series features excellent samples of the traditional Taarab music of the East African coast. ‘Muhogo’ by Miraj Juma - a rare recording from the 40’s- is a live performance with the orchestra of the Juahar club – the oldest music club on the Kenyan coast. Also featured is one of taarab’s most outstanding female voices, Zuhura Swaleh who introduces elements of female wedding ngoma dances to her music.

The album showcases some classics of benga music, fast guitar driven tunes that have been at the forefront of Kenyan pop since the late 1960s. Benga originated in Western Kenya, and some of the founding fathers appear on the new album, including D.O. Misiani and Shirati Jazz. Modern Benga artist Queen Jane provides ‘Nduraga Ngwetereire’ (‘I’m Still Waiting For You’) a song about a girl waiting for her boyfriend to return.

Alongside classic Taarab, Benga and Congolese influenced Rumba tracks are songs from some of Kenya’s most innovative modern artists- fusing local traditions with international genres such as hip-hop and R&B. Featured artists include Nyota Ndogo the “Little Star” of the coast, whose influences lie somewhere between taarab and modern pop, Susan Owiyo and one of Kenya’s best known acts Gidi Gidi Maji Maji - here playing their classic dance track “Ting Badi Malo”.

The Rough GuideTo The Music Of Kenya is the perfect introduction to the diverse sounds of Kenya, and gives you a tour through benga classics, taarab tracks and the new innovative sounds from younger musicians.
