KIJANI MUSIC FESTIVAL IN KENYA | The Kijani Kenya Trust will be hosting a major music festival throughout Kenya, with visiting artists including a world renowned Opera company, an Indian Sitar maestro and one of Japan's top pianists among others. Following in the footsteps of last year's highly successful staging of Carmen in Kenya- the performances will be raising both money and awareness for AIDS in Africa.
This special festival is being held to benefit the Kijani Kenya Trust , a charitable trust working to improve HIV care and education in Africa, as well as supporting conservation of natural resources to create a better future for the continent. The festival is sponsored by Kenya's CFC Bank, Safaricom and is supported by Abecrombie and Kent, Lonrho hotels, General Motors, Grand Regency hotel, Severin Sea Lodge, Sarova Hotels, Regional Air, Air Kenya, Sopa Lodges and Nation Media group.
This special fundraising tour will bring together some of the world's finest and most diverse musical talents using some of Africa’s most dramatic natural and historic backdrops to add a unique flavour to the production.
The festival starts with a pair of performances by the Garden Opera Company and the London Adventist Chorale in Naivasha on February 18th-19th. Following a concert at the Naivasha yacht club on the 18th, there will be a full production of Don Giovanni (February 19th) held within the imposing red cliffs of Hell’s Gate National Park, a remarkable volcanic landscape where plains game grazes on open savannah among towering rock formations.
On the 20th February acclaimed Japanese Concert Pianist Noriko Ogawa will be performing a concert at Nairobi's All Saints Cathedral, alongside the London Adventist Chorale, followed by a solo peformance on 23rd February at the National Theatre.
On February 25th of March a concert by The Garden Opera Company and one of India's great Sitar Masters Gaurav Mazumdar, will be held at the Mount Kenya Safari Club , one of Kenya’s finest and best known hotels nestled at the foot of Africa’s second highest peak. This outdoor performance is specially timed to provide a stunning backdrop as the sun sets over the snow capped equatorial mountain.
On February 26th the Opera Company will be performing a full production of Don Giovanni at the Club.
The third performance of Don Giovanni will have a unique historical atmosphere, held within the walls of Mombasa’s 14th century Fort Jesus- overlooking the Indian Ocean. This Fort is no stranger to drama, it’s long history is still relived by its Son Et Lumiere show throughout the year. These walls have been witness to centuries of battle and intrigue, and on March 5th, they will echo with the sounds of one of Opera’s finest creations.
Sitar player Gaurav Mazumdar will be giving a solo concert back in Nairobi at the Village Market on 1st March, and again at Mombasa's Fort Jesus on March 4th.
